Collection: Black or dark opals
Black opals are considered the finest and rarest gemstones on the planet.
The black background provides a contrast that makes the colours in a black opal display more vividly than in lighter opals.
Some opals are considered "dark" when they are significantly darker than white opal but don't meet the criteria to be classed as black opal. In this case they are called dark or semi-black.
Dark and black opals can come from most of the opal fields in Australia however Lightning Ridge is considered the Black Opal capital with a much higher occurrence of quality black gemstones compared to the other opal fields.
