Matrix Opal

Matrix opal was formed when the silica rich solution permeated the porous host rock filling the small voids with colourful opal.  Andamooka matrix can produce a very unique floral pattern of colour which is very sought after.

Early miners discovered that treating the opal bearing host rock created a dark background which enhanced the colour and vastly improved the appeal. 

The treatment process involves impregnating the host rock with a rich sugar syrup which when "cooked" carbonises turning black.  The results can be variable and top quality matrix opal is highly prized by those who appreciate its unique beauty.
